Trellis Arch And Art Garden

This water feature in Dereham, Norfolk is the focal point of the garden. The Mediterranean style pond is framed by timber pergola arches and the Moorish influenced rill stream leads the eye along a vista, through a pair of evergreen Pittosporum tobira, across the widest part of the garden, to a centrally aligned summer house at the far end of it.

The fibreglass rill pond seen above is coated with a special finish to make it look like stone or a render, enhancing its Mediterranean style and evoking the Moorish gardens of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. The long narrow shape of the rill is enhanced by the planting of pairs of Japanese maples Acer Palmatum ‘Seiryu’ and Pittosporum Tobira.

In this series of before and after shots you can see the transformation of the garden with the long serpentine lawn curving around the patio, water feature and summerhouse, linking the different components of the garden with its eye catching curves. A stepping stone path leads around the corner of the house in this ‘L’ shaped plot, its own curve offset by that of the lawn, bringing the disjointed shape of the plot together by flowing around its angles.

Architectural garden design was imperative to make the most of this rooms expansive bi fold doors and their connection of the indoor/outdoor spaces. Strong alignments of path, arches, pond and sculpture gives plenty of detail for viewing whilst sitting in the room, and invites our clients out to fixed seating around the pond or on to a circular walk through dense planting around the garden.

The Indian sandstone patio in this picture was laid to continue the pattern of the wooden floor inside the house. Here you can see the ‘wrapping around’ of the many different elements of the garden; the lawn curves around the patio and rill, the planting surrounds the patio and stepping stone path, and frames the rill, paving encircles the pond, and arches create an avenue around the path. Interlocking the different parts of the garden in this way strengthens the composition, adds detail and complexity to a small space.

Our full colour design drawings offer our clients different options and variations so that they can get involved in the design process. Above left you can see overall structure of the garden as it was built and right is one of our 3d hand drawn sketch for English gothic style arches around the water feature which was not used, instead we proceeded with an oriental style arch we included in a different version.
